The British Clematis Society

Publications that blossom and grow

With 350 members ranging from absolute beginners to experts, the British Clematis Society aims to encourage all gardeners to grow and enjoy clematis. Their annual journal is both an essential part of their outreach and the 148 page publication is a highlight in their members’ calendar.

What they're looking for

In 2020, following the retirement of a key member, they lost the journal’s editor, designer and much of the associated print and production knowledge. They needed extra support and a cost-efficient solution covering design, print and international mailing.

What we provided

A completely supportive end-to-end service with  a team who understood the society’s resource limitations and embraced their ambition. We enabled them to organise and manage the project to minimise design and print costs, introduced them to collaborative online proofing, and guided them every step of the way to accelerate the learning curve.

Working to a tight budget, the designers at The Graphic Design House (part of the Bishops Group) enhanced the look and feel by creating clearly defined sections. They made the magazine easier to navigate and enjoy by adopting a consistent approach to layout and use of colours.

The finishing touch

A publication like this has to last all year round and withstand frequent handling. Its pagination meant it had to be perfect bound. At Bishops, we use a specialist hot-melt glue to secure the pages into the spine, combining strength with flexibility. For added protection we recommended gloss lamination for the outer covers, whilst our house Silk paper stock provided an economic solution for the internal pages without compromising the vibrancy of the images.

With the help of The Mailing People (our own mailing house), we made sure the journal mailing qualified for available postage discounts. We kept the pack weight and cost down while keeping the journal protected by recommending polybags instead of polywrap. Another saving was made because we don’t charge to deliver print to our own mailing house, so that saved a bit more of the club’s funds too.

We're absolutely delighted with the magazine. The colours and images look amazing and I couldn't be more pleased. The support we received really was invaluable.
