Quality Where the Detail Matters

Annual reports often combine very different types of content. Fine text and detailed tables need to remain sharp and legible, while photography, graphics and brand colours need accurate reproduction from one page to the next.

Our HP Indigo digital presses deliver high-quality results on smaller quantities, while our Heidelberg litho presses use Inpress Control to continuously monitor and adjust colour throughout longer print runs.

It’s technology backed by an expert pre-press team, experienced print minders and bindery teams, giving you consistent results across a publication where attention to detail matters.

Annual Report Printing Made Simple

Once an annual report has been signed off, there can be very little time between receiving the final artwork and needing finished copies. Our production capacity and in-house finishing give us greater control over the process and help keep tight deadlines on track.

Designed With Print in Mind

Need help with the design as well as the print?

Our fully owned creative agency, The Graphic Design House, works alongside Bishops every day. Their design team is highly experienced in the design of annual reports for organisations such as Sport Industry Group, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and Earthwatch.

Being attached to Bishops Printers means they already understand how paper, binding, finishes and production requirements affect the creative process and can support anything from updating an existing prospectus to creating a completely new design.

Detail That Stays Clear in Print

Annual reports can move from full-page photography and strong brand colour to financial tables, charts, footnotes and pages of detailed information.

Our digital and litho print capabilities give us excellent colour and fine-detail reproduction across both short and longer runs. Our proofing and production teams are also there to help identify potential print issues before they become problems.

      Flexible Delivery

Not every copy of an annual report necessarily needs to be produced or distributed in the same way.

You may need presentation copies for a board meeting, quantities sent to different offices, reports mailed directly to stakeholders or different versions for particular audiences. We can accommodate split deliveries, custom packing and, through The Mailing People, direct mail, with no additional delivery charge for print transferred from Bishops to our mailing house.

      Annual Report Printing Tips

Annual reports can contain hundreds of individual pieces of information, so getting the print specification right is about more than choosing an attractive paper. These are some of the things worth considering before the artwork is finalised.

Design Tables and Small Type for Print

Financial tables, footnotes and supporting information can contain some of the smallest text in an annual report.

Check type sizes, weights and contrast carefully rather than relying solely on how the document appears on screen. Fine reversed-out text, light typefaces and low-contrast colours can become considerably harder to read once printed.

Choose Paper for Both Images and Information

A report containing large amounts of financial data has different requirements to one built around photography and impact stories.

Paper surface, shade and opacity all influence readability and image reproduction. Where a report needs to do both, a good all-round stock can provide the balance without unnecessarily increasing the specification or cost.

Think About Page Count Before Choosing the Binding

Pagination, paper thickness and binding are closely connected.

Lower page counts are often well suited to saddle stitching, while thicker annual reports can benefit from perfect binding. If you’re close to the point where either method could work, ask us to price the alternatives before the design is finalised.

Allow for the Binding in Your Artwork

Annual reports frequently use tables, charts and double-page photography, so inner margins are particularly important.

Perfect bound publications don’t open completely flat. Allow sufficient space at the binding edge so figures, text and important elements aren’t pulled into the spine. If you’re using saddle stitching, remember that your total pagination needs to work in multiples of four.

Don't Order Last Year's Quantity Automatically

Consider who genuinely needs a printed copy before repeating the previous year’s order.

Digital printing makes smaller quantities commercially practical, so reports intended primarily for key stakeholders, board members or meetings don’t necessarily require a large print run. Additional copies can be produced when there’s a genuine requirement.

Finalise the Print Specification Before Designing the Cover

If you’re perfect binding your report, don’t guess the spine measurement.

The finished spine depends on both pagination and the thickness of the chosen paper. Confirming the stock first means we can calculate the spine correctly before your designer prepares the final cover artwork, avoiding unnecessary amendments later.

      Annual Report Printing FAQs

What is the best paper for an annual report?

It depends on the balance of content within the report and the impression you want to create.

Coated papers are particularly effective for photography, graphics and strong colour, while uncoated stocks provide a softer appearance and tactile finish. Opacity is also important for reports containing significant amounts of text and financial information, as excessive show-through can affect readability.

We can provide recommendations based on your design, budget and intended use.

Should an annual report be saddle stitched or perfect bound?

      Both can work well.

Saddle stitching is cost-effective and particularly suitable for lower page counts. Perfect binding creates a square spine and is generally better suited to thicker reports.

Paper thickness also affects what’s possible, so it’s worth discussing the specification before artwork is finalised.

Can you print small quantities of annual reports?

Yes, our digital presses make high-quality short runs commercially viable, which is useful where printed reports are only required for directors, trustees, shareholders, meetings or other key stakeholders.

For larger quantities, our litho printing capability provides greater economies of scale.

Can you print annual reports with lots of charts and financial tables?

Yes. Annual reports commonly contain a mixture of small text, tables, graphs, photography and other graphics.

Sharp reproduction and accurate colour are particularly important for this type of publication, which is why we’d recommend supplying print-ready PDF artwork and checking fine text and charts carefully during the proofing process.

Can you help design an annual report?

Yes. The Graphic Design House, our fully owned creative agency, has a seven-strong design team that can provide anything from additional creative resource to complete annual report design.

Working closely with our production teams also means print considerations can be taken into account while the report is being designed.

Can you add specialist finishes to an annual report?

Yes. Matt, gloss, anti-scuff and soft-touch laminates are available, alongside decorative finishes including spot gloss UV varnish, foiling and embossing.

Not every annual report needs specialist finishing, so we’ll help you determine what adds something worthwhile to the publication and your budget.

Can you produce different versions of an annual report?

Yes. Digital printing provides flexibility where you need different covers, content or other variations across smaller quantities.

Tell us what needs to change between versions and we’ll advise on the most practical production method.

Can you mail annual reports after printing?

Yes. Through The Mailing People, our fully owned mailing house, we can manage fulfilment and mailing after production.

Print moves directly between our facilities without an additional delivery charge between sites, and we can accommodate requirements such as individual addressing, packing and multiple destinations.

How quickly can you print an annual report?

Turnaround depends on quantity, binding, paper availability and finishing requirements. Ideally, you should allow 5-6 days from proof approval.

Annual reports are frequently deadline-driven, so we’d always recommend discussing your required delivery date with us as early as possible. If you’re already working against the clock, speak to us and we’ll tell you honestly what’s achievable.

Why choose Bishops Printers for annual report printing?
